  • Name Jesse HINSON
    • Married: 28 NOV 1787 in Fauquier Co., VA to Elizabeth Crawford b: 1765 in Fauquier Co., VA

Note: Reuben Crawford, father of the bride, signed his consent. Robert Hinson posted the security bond, and John Miller and William Homes were witnesses.
    • [The following is taken from the paper "HANSON", written by the descendants of Adolphus D. and Nancy Denver Satterfield Hanson]

Jesse Hanson was a real pioneer. He and his wife Elizabeth Crawford Hanson remained in Fauquier Co., VA until 1795. At the age of 28, he moved his family to Georgia. We can assume they moved in a covered wagon as a part of a wagon train, as this was customary during this period. They were in Jackson Co., GA in 1798, owning 50 acres-situated on 'Wild Cat Creek.' In 1811 the family had moved on to Morgan Co., GA, and then, again, to Walton Co., GA in 1820. They are listed on the 1830 census in Fayette Co., GA His first wife, Elizabeth Crawford, died there in 1840.

Jesse Hanson married, secondly, to Mary Murphy in 1841, at the age of 74. In 1875, 23 years after Jesse's death, his second wife filed a widow's claim for a pension due her for her husband's service in the War of 1812. Her claim was rejected since a record of service was not found. But this was 63 years after the War of 1812, and during Reconstruction, when few Southern widows received pensions. On her application for pension, when she was 89 years old, she stated that she was "the widow of Jesse Hanson, who served in the War of 1812. He was a volunteer in Captain Butts' Company, Hoggs Regiment, in Morgan Co., GA, in the spring of 1812; and was honorably discharged in the fall of 1812. He was in the fights with the Indians; had to be out to keep the Indians from killing us. He drew a land warrant for his service in 1850 or 1851." The claim was rejected in 1877. No bounty land warrant, nor proof of his service, was found.

    Notes
    • Jesse married Elizabeth Crawford, 28 Nov. 1787, in Fauquier Co. The day of the wedding both Jesse and his father posted a marriage bond. The bond stated-"Know all men by these presents that we Jesse Hinson and Robert Hinson are held and firmly bound unto Edmund Randolph, Exq. Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia in sum of 50 pounds."
    • Our third Great-Grandfather, Jesse Hanson, was born July 24, 1761 in Stafford Co., VA and died March 7, 1852 in Randolph Co., AL He married Elizabeth Crawford on November 28, 1787 in Fauquier Co., VA.

By 1798, Jesse and Elizabeth had arrived in Georgia and were found living in the Wild Cat Creek District of Jackson County, owning 50 acres.

In 1809, Jesse and family were living Morgan Co., GA. In the Spring of 1812, Jesse enlisted with Captain Butt's Company, Hoggs Regiments, Morgan Co., GA during the War of 1812. He was discharged in the Fall of 1812. The Hanson's stayed in Morgan County until at least 1818, and by 1820 they were living in Walton Co., GA. next door to their daughter, Sarah, and son-in-law, Edwin Lamberth (our great-great grandparents).

About 1826, the Hansons moved to Fayette Co., GA. They are enumerated on the 1830 Walton Co., GA Census. Elizabeth dies in Walton Co. in 1840. Some researchers have indicated that Jessie divorced Elizabeth, but we have been unable to verify this.

In 1875, some 23 years after Jessie's death, Mary Murphy filed a widow's claim for pension associated with Jesse's service in the in the War of 1812. In her application she stated that she was 89 years old and the widow of Jesse Hanson who served in the War of 1812, a volunteer in Captain Butt's Company, Hoggs Regiment in Morgan Co., GA in the Spring of 1812 and was honorably discharged in the Fall of 1812. "He was in fights with the Indians and had to be out to keep the Indians from killing us." She also indicated that he drew a land warrant for his services in "1850 or 1851". No bounty land warrant or any proof of his service was found and, in 1877, the claim was rejected. (Source: Descendants of Adolphus D. and Nancy Denver Satterfield Hanson).

"Mary's pension claim was not rejected. The Georgia pension commissioner ran an announcement in the Atlanta Constitution in 1883 searching for Mary Hanson, widow of Jesse Hanson, for she was owed a pension of $8 per month for her husband's service in the War of 1812."
