Florence Petruska (nee Michalowski) of Paramus, NJ formerly of Monroe Twp and
South River, passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on January 27, 2021.
Florence was born in South River, NJ, the youngest of eleven children. She graduated high school at the age of 16, and after studying at business college, went to work at South River Trust Company (now Bank of America). She worked there for 45 years, achieving the role of Assistant Branch Manager.
Florence was a devout parishioner of St Mary?s of Ostrabrama, South River where she was a member of St Mary?s Altar and Rosary Society, and the Raritan Chapter #58 of OES. Florence was devoted to her family, six her children, eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was an avid reader, reading 3-4 books a week, a puzzle and crossword master, and an overall math whiz. She loved to walk and was at the gym at 6am with her dear friends at Rossmoor. She was always ready for an adventure. She travelled around the US, Europe and Australia.
Florence loved holiday traditions, especially Christmas Eve where she followed the Polish tradition and also her annual Christmas baked Hungarian cookies, a recipe she received from her Mother-in-law, Mary.
Florence is survived by her children Stephen and wife Christina, Nancy and husband Bob, William and wife Cindi, David, Florence and husband Peter, Karen; her grandchildren Liz and husband Andy, Nicole and husband Erik, Kate and husband Jonathan, Peter and fiancé Alexandra, Daniel and wife Erin, Kristen, Carly and husband Ryan, Meghan and husband Len, Sarah and husband Ricky, Amelia; and great grandchildren Alexander, Wyatt, Sophie, Luke, Phoebe, Freya and Margot. She is predeceased by husband Stephen Petruska Jr.
Vale to the most amazing, loving Mother in the world. Rest in peace knowing you are loved and missed.
A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday 9am at St Mary of Ostrabrama Church, 30 Jackson St, South River, NJ with burial to follow at St Mary?s Cemetery in East Brunswick. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Florence?s name to the Monroe Township Library Foundation, 4 Municipal Plaza, Monroe Twp, NJ 08831. My paternal grandfather was Adam Michalowski--He married Mary Kosmoska-- had twin sons, one survived, my father, Joseph Michalowski who was born in February 1883.
My maternal grandfather was Stanley Nieradko- He Married Mary Gwiazdowska-They had 4 children--3 survived--my mother, Stella Nieradko, who was born on November 13, 1881, her sister Anna(a nun) and her brother, Joseph Nieradko.
My parents had 3 children born in Poland--Maryanna, Joseph, and Janina(Jennie My father left Poland in either 1905 or 1906. My mother at the age of 26 and my brother Joseph who was 3 years old embarked from Bremen, Germany on the Ship Zieten, and arrived at Ellis Island on October 27, 1907. My sisters, Maryanna and Jennie stayed with my maternal grandparents and came to America several years later.
They lived in Brooklyn, N.Y. and had 5 children there--Adam(who died at the age of 2); John, Stella, Alexander(who died at the age of 3); and Marcel(Mike). They moved to Raritan, N. J. where Sophie was born. They moved to Sayreville. N.J. and then to South River, N.J. where Stanley and I were born.
My father died September 15, 1937; my mother died December 24, 1959.
Maryanna was born January 6, 1901 in Poland. She married at 16 to Marcel Barglowski on April 29, 1917 in Sayreville, N.J. They had 5 children--Mary(Andrew Harabin), Albin(Kitty); Thaddeus(died at the age of 6); Leon(Florence) and Regina(Nick Ussia) Maryanna died December 30, 1973 in Bound Brook, N.J.
Joseph George was born December 18,1903 in Poland. He married Veronica Karbowski on December 1, 1931 in Raritan, N.J. They had 2 children--Joseph and Veronica(Peter Colalillo). He was shot and killed on May 1, 1943 in Highland Park,N.J.
Jennie(Janina) was born August 26, 1905 in Polalnd. She married Richard Ryan on October 1, 1923 in South Amboy, N.J.. They had 1 daughter, Jean(Norek). Jennie died on Septermber 27, 1994 in South Amboy, N. J.
John was born June 24, 1910 in Brooklyn, N. Y. He married Anne Carr on August 6, 1933 in South River, N.J. They had I son, Thomas(Enid). John died on October 16, 1991 in South River, N. J.
Stella was born June 23, 1912 in Brooklyn, N.Y. She married Michael Silvanovich on November 21, 1930 in South River, N. J. They had 2 sons, Michael (Marie) and Robert. Stella died on May 3, 1999 in Old Bridge, N. J.
Marcel(Mike) was born on March 31, 1917 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He married Anna Sliczynski on February 2, 1944 in South River, N. J. They had 4 children--Thaddeus, Paul, Patricia and Leonard. Mike died on March 12, 2003 in Old Bridge, N. J.
Sophie was born September 25, 1919 in Raritan, N. J. She married Benjamin Gruda on September 15,1940 in South River, N. J. They had 4 children--Dolores, Amelia(who died at birth); Benjamin(Rita) and Raymond(Mary). Sophie died on November 6, 2006 in Cranbury, N. J.
Stanley was born November 8, 1921 in South River, N. J.. He married Mary Palladino on September 16, 1944 in Jamesburg, N. J. They had 2 children Norma(John Bee)(she died in 1995) and Stanley(Michelle). Stan died December 8, 2007 in Princeton, N. J.
Florence was born either January 5th or 6th 1924 on 9 Milton Avenue, South River. N. J. She married Stephen Petruska, Jr.'on January 25, 1945 in South River, N. J.. They had 6 children--Stephen(Christina Bula); Nancy(Robert Johnson); William(Cynthia Warren); David; Florence(Peter Scivoletti) and Karen Hoskins.
When my mother wrote to Poland this was the address she sent the mail to: Joseph Nieradko, Wies, Okrasin, Woje Wootzwo Bialostok, Poczta Radzillow, Poland.
PETRUSKA
Istvan(Stephen) Petruska was born March 5, 1896 in Hungary. He had 1 brother, Michael and 1 sister Julia Ruszinko. He married Mary Fagyas in New Brunswick,. N. J. I believe in 1922. He died D4mber 24, 1962.
Mary Fagyas Petruska was born in October of 1904 in Hungary. She had 2 brothers--Stephen and Sandor. She died June 19, 1962. I believe she had a sister, and her mothers first name was Susanna.
They had I son, Stephen, Jr. who was born on March 1923 in New Brunswick, N. J. He died on August 29, 2001 in No.Cape May, N. J.
