- Sarah Jane Sargent Newsom was born near Lyons, Greene county, Indiana. In 1869 she married Joseph Ellis Newsom in Greene county. In 1878 Sarah and Joseph migrated west and settled ultimately near North Bend, Dodge county, Nebraska. They raised ten children. A brief notation about each child is presented below:
Olive Blanche "Ollie" was born May 14, 1871 in Greene county, Indiana. She died October 1, 1940 in North Bend, Nebraska. Ollie never married. As the eldest of ten children she devoted her life to helping her parents and her younger siblings. She worked for a number of years as a clerk in the Wahoo, Nebraska post office.
Jacob Andrew "Jake" was born December 5, 1873 in Greene county, Indiana. He died at age 32 on December 7, 1905 in a Union Pacific train wreck about six miles west of Rock Springs, Wyoming. He was working as a railway mail clerk aboard the eastbound Overland Limited passenger train when it collided head-on with a west-bound freight train. Jake was one of ten people who lost their lives in the wreck. He was unmarried at the time of his death.
Joseph Absalom "Joe" was born November 28, 1875 in Greene county, Indiana. He died July 1, 1962 in North Bend, Nebraska. Joe became the publisher of the local newspaper, the North Bend Eagle. He disliked his middle name so much that he had it legally changed to Chester. He married Adda Mary Guttery in 1908. They raised two children, Phillip Sargent and Betty Jane.
James Alfred "Jimmy" was born February 7, 1878 in Greene county, Indiana. He died tragically at age ten April 8, 1888 in North Bend, Nebraska after being run over by a train!
Henry Jackson "Jack" was born March 1, 1881 in Dodge county, Nebraska, the first of the children to be born in Nebraska. He died February 19, 1964 in North Bend. Jack worked many years for the postal service, first as a railway mail clerk, then as a clerk in the North Bend post office, and finally as postmaster. Between postal jobs he assisted his brother in publishing the North Bend Eagle. He married Ida Natalie Nelson August 5, 1918 in Glover, North Dakota. They lived their entire married life in North Bend. They raised six children, Ida Marie, Faith, Irene, Jack Jr., Hazel, and Keith.
Jessie Alice was born March 27, 1883 in Dodge county, Nebraska. She died May 11, 1972 in North Bend. Jessie married Arthur B. Skinner June 28, 1905. They raised two children, Joseph Byron and Dorothy Esther.
Bessie Pearl was born April 19, 1885 in Dodge county, Nebraska. Bessie died July 23, 1903 in North Bend of a heart condition not long after graduating from high school.
Lorena Ethel "Ethel" was born August 3, 1887 in Dodge county, Nebraska. She married Will H. Miller in 1912.
Ethel and Will had one child, Wilbur Doane "Don". Ethel died October 18, 1918 at age 31 in North Bend during the great flu epidemic.
Minnie Hazel was born December 28, 1889 in Dodge county, Nebraska. Minnie never married. She worked as a postal clerk and as a librarian in North Bend.
Harriett Marie "Marie" was born January 19, 1893 in Dodge county, Nebraska. She died September 5, 1977 in Yakima, WA where her daughter Ruth was living. Marie married Earnest Oscar Sweany September 25, 1912 in North Bend. Earnest was a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) minister. Over the years Marie and Earnest served at a number of small town churches in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa. After her husband died in 1943, Marie moved to San Jose, California to be near her son Joseph R. where she worked for a local charity. Still later she moved to Laguna Beach CA when son Joseph R. moved his family there. Marie and Earnest raised four children, David N., Ruth Elizabeth, Mary Helen and Joseph Robert.
