- Joseph Ellis Newsom was born in Greene county Indiana, the eldest child of Jacob Absalom and Delitha Miller Newsom. In 1869 he married Sarah Jane Sargent of Lyons, Indiana. In 1878 Joseph and Sarah migrated westward to the Concordia, Kansas area. At the time they had four very small children, Ollie, Jake, Joe and James, the latter only a couple months old. In Kansas they joined John Henry and Nancy Jane Thompson (Joseph Newsom's sister and brother-in-law) who had migrated a year earlier. The Thompsons also had small children at the time. The two families lived together in a house on the wide open Kansas prairie. They later joked that the house was so tiny that to get away from the table at least one or two of them had to climb out a window. After two or three months, they decided to migrate north about 180 miles to Dodge county Nebraska where other Hoosier families had settled. This they did, each family traveling in their own horse-drawn wagon. How many days it took is not recorded. They had a very frightening experience fording the Platte, but finally they all arrived safely on the north bank of the river. At that point, they were only a few miles from their destination. For about five years the two families farmed west of the village of North Bend, then Joseph and Sarah Newsom gave up farming and moved into town. In North Bend Joseph worked at various jobs---town clerk, town judge, town constable, etc. until obtaining work as a clerk in the North Bend post office. He later became postmaster.
