    Notes
    • Henry Jackson "Jack" Newsom was born in North Bend, Nebraska in 1881. The town itself was only 25 years old at the time. Jack's parents, Joseph Ellis and Sarah Jane Sargent Newsom, had migrated to Nebraska in 1878 from Greene county Indiana via Cloud county Kansas. They traveled from Kansas to North Bend, Nebraska in a horse-drawn wagon with their four small children in the wagon, the youngest child only 5 months old! Fording the Platte river proved a frightening and dangerous experience.

Jack was the first of their ten children to be born in Nebraska. He worked a goodly part of his life for the postal service, initially as a railway mail clerk on the Omaha-Cheyenne run, then as a clerk in the North Bend post office, and finally as the postmaster. He married Ida Natalie Nelson August 5, 1918.

Experienced and capable, he was none-the-less booted out of the post office when FDR became president in 1933. The spoils system reached far down the chain in those days! With a wife, six children and no job right at the onset of the Great Depression, Jack had a tough time providing for his family. The power company shut off the electricity, the bank foreclosed on the house, and other bad things happened including record drouth and record winter cold.

Jack and his family took it all in stride, but nevertheless it was a very tough time for all of them! Jack loved his family, his church, his home town, his garden, and Platte river catfishing (roughly in that order). He was a man of few words. When asked by one of his children how he met their mother he said "Oh, that's a long story". And that was the end of the explanation! He admired Calvin Coolidge (an avid non-talker) and Herbert Hoover (an avid fisherman). A good and honest man, Jack certainly was that and more!
