    • I am very grateful to Alicia Blackman who spent many long hours researching records in Stokes, Surry and Rowan counties North Carolina. The following is Alicia's summary of her work.

The parentage of Archibald Johnson [1762-1822], who died in Washington County, Indiana has long been in question. Based on deed and estate research in Stokes County, North Carolina, records point to his father being Henry Johnson who died 1809 in Stokes County, North Carolina, mother is unknown, for the following reasons:

Henry Johnson died in 1809 but did not leave a will.
His estate file mentions his wife several times, but always as simply "the widow", a given name is never mentioned.

Henry received two land grants from the state of North Carolina; 200 acres in 1784 when it was still Surry County [Surry Co., NC deed book C pg. 233]; another 14 acres in 1798 when it was Stokes County. [Stokes Co., NC deed book 3 page 261], both tracts are adjacent to each other and "on the waters of Deep River and the Guilford County line.
Henry never sold any of this land as deeds after his death still state that he died owning 214 acres on the waters of Deep River, so there is no deed from "Henry Johnson and wife".

When Henry died in 1809, deeds indicate that he had 7 children and a widow that survived him. They each got 25 acres of his land, so that comes pretty close to 214 acres.

A deed dated 25 May 1914 [Stokes Co., NC deed book 5, page 524], confirms Henry had a son named Archibald has this phrase in it; "All my tract or parcel of land lying in the county of Stokes, on the Waters of Deep River, being the same formerly belonging to Henry Johnson deceased, and was afterwards divided, and the said Peter Johnson purchased the said land in lots, from the heirs [to wit;] twenty five acres from Archibald Johnson, twenty five acres from Abraham Johnson, and twenty five acres from his mother, with his own Lot of twenty five acres making in the whole one hundred acres." The mother is never named.

A strong connection to the Idol family can be found in the estate file of Henry Johnson. His inventory included notes from the following [among others]:
Jacob Idol & William Clampitt 0.19.6 pounds
Hannah Johnson & Elijah Johnson 3.11.7 pounds
Archibald Johnson & Jacob Idol 7.8.0 pounds
Peter Johnson & William Clampitt 18.7.6 pounds
Joseph Idol & Jacob Idol 1.6.8 pounds
Robertson Stafford & William Clampitt 9.0.0 pounds
Archibald Johnson & Robertson Stafford 10.0.0 pounds

One final piece of evidence can be found in the naming patterns of the children of both Henry Johnson and Archibald Johnson. Henry Johnson of Stokes has children [names all pulled from deeds] as follows:

      1) Chloe married Jacob Idol
      2) Archibald married Mary Idol
      3) Abraham
      4) Peter
      5) Francis
      6) Ruth married William Clampitt
      7) Hannah married Robertson Stafford
Archibald Johnson has children Henry [named for his father] and Chloe, Francis, Hannah [all named for his siblings].

From The McCubbins Collection, Virkus Compendium Vol. iv, page 508; (5) Jacob Idol (1761-1851) of Stokes Co. NC in American Revolution & pensioned, married 1782, Choe Johnson(1759-1859), daughter of Henry Johnson (6) an agent of Gen. Greene who procured supplies for the army and died ca.1809.
